Burns

Burn wounds result from exposure to heat, chemicals, electricity, or radiation, damaging the skin and underlying tissues. There are three main types of burn wounds: first-degree, second-degree, and third-degree.

Types of Burn Wounds:

  • First-Degree Burns: Affect the outer layer of skin (epidermis), causing redness, pain, and mild swelling. They typically heal within a few days with basic first aid.
  • Second-Degree Burns: Extend into the second layer of skin (dermis), causing blisters, severe pain, and redness. They may require medical attention to prevent infection and promote healing.
  • Third-Degree Burns: Extend through all layers of skin and can damage underlying tissues, causing white or blackened skin, numbness, and severe pain. These burns often require specialized medical treatment, such as skin grafts.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of burn wounds include pain, redness, swelling, blistering, and in severe cases, charring of the skin. Shock and difficulty breathing can occur if burns cover a large area of the body.

Treatment:

Immediate treatment for burns involves cooling the affected area with cool (not cold) water to stop the burning process. Applying a sterile, non-stick bandage can protect the wound and promote healing. Severe burns may require specialized care, including wound cleaning, antibiotics to prevent infection, and in some cases, surgical procedures like skin grafts to aid recovery.
