Venous Leg Disease Wounds
Venous Leg Disease Wounds
Venous leg disease, also known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), occurs when veins in the legs fail to pump blood back to the heart efficiently. This can lead to a variety of wounds, commonly known as venous leg ulcers.
Types of Wounds:
- Venous Leg Ulcers or Stasis Ulcers: These are open sores that typically develop on the lower leg or ankle. They result from long-term pooling of blood in the veins due to weakened valves, causing pressure buildup and skin breakdown.
Symptoms:
Symptoms of venous leg disease include swelling (edema), achiness or heaviness in the legs, itching or tingling sensations, and skin discoloration (usually brownish). As the condition progresses, these symptoms may worsen, and ulcers may form, which can be painful and slow to heal.
Treatment:
Effective treatment of venous leg ulcers involves improving circulation and addressing underlying vein dysfunction. This includes compression therapy to help squeeze the veins and improve blood flow, wound care with specialized dressings to promote healing and prevent infection, and elevation of the legs to reduce swelling. In some cases, procedures such as vein ablation or surgery may be necessary to correct vein problems and prevent recurrence of ulcers.
